Second Year Artifact - ETEC 647e Healthy Meal Challenge
Project Details and DescriptionThis was a team assignment to create an authentic learning activity that would provide hands-on experience with using and applying emerging technology for teaching and learning. The criteria for the assignment are:
Working with Tim Freitas and Sean Walsh, we brainstormed ideas and decided on having our classmates create healthy meals using a mobile technology tool called SnapGuide. With the rise in obesity, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes in the United States, there is a need to foster healthy eating habits. Although many people are aware of what makes up a healthy meal, the variety of healthy choices may not be evident. With the SnapGuide app on the iPhone/iPad, it's easy to put together recipes and show how one makes a healthy dish. After our initial proposal, my team received several wonderful feedback from our peers. Many wondered how this would be a group project and how it addresses emerging technology. Another issue to contend with is the definition of "healthy" in the rubric. With these in mind, our team went back to modify the directions for the assignments to clarify team cohesiveness (each team would pick a theme with each member making a dish to go along with the theme) and each team should describe how their meal of choice is "healthy". This assignment shows the use of emerging technology in that it utilizes mobile technology to create a product (step-by-step recipe for a healthy meal). The final assignment was picked by Dr. Bert Kimura as a course deliverable.
