Final Research Project
Masters Thesis (Action Research):
Problem-Based Learning for Healthy Hearts
Problem-Based Learning for Healthy Hearts
ETEC 687 - Fall 2012 PracticumThe idea for this project stemmed from an assignment in ETEC 611 in Spring 2012 with Dr. Curtis Ho. My team performed a literature review on problem-based learning (PBL). Since I have already been doing PBL as a culminating project in my Anatomy and Physiology course, I wondered if I could transform the cardiovascular unit to PBL alone without front loading my students with lectures.
In May 2012, I was fortunate to attend the Pacific Region Learning Summit (PRLS) at Leeward Community College (LCC). The week-long workshop I attended was on Transforming Instruction with Problem-Based Learning(PBL). Through this workshop led by Leanne Chun and Lani Ho, I was able to create an outline of my action research module. The idea behind this type of PBL is that students are immersed in a real-life scenario. In my case, I chose a cardiology clinic as the setting for teaching my students about the human cardiovascular system. The result is this PBL module created in Google Site. |
Going into ETEC 687, I felt pretty good about where the project was heading. After several discussions with my critical friends group (Kasey and Marie) and my advisor, Dr. Peter Leong, I decided to submit my IRB proposal ahead of schedule so that I can implement my action research project with my fall semester students. If I wait until spring, the timing will not work out where I would have results in time to finish my project.
Thus, my problem statement is:
The purpose of this action research project is to evaluate the effectiveness of problem-based learning in a blended learning environment to increase concept attainment of the cardiovascular system for high school students in an Anatomy and Physiology course at a private school in Honolulu.
I really appreciate the extra time Dr. Peter and my critical friends group put in to help me through the IRB process ahead of schedule. I was able to get approval in Oct 2012 to implement my project in Nov 2012.

ETEC 690 - Spring 2013 Practicum
Upon return from winter break, I started writing my paper with the help of the Research Workshop and Writers' Workshops. The presentations by Dr. Mike Menchaca, Dr. Ari Eichelberger, and Dr. Peter Leong helped us masters students to focus on the tasks needed to complete. It was helpful to have everything chunked out for us in a timely manner so that each deliverable was manageable.
Again, my critical friends group and Dr. Peter provided numerous feedback during the process of writing the thesis paper. My peers in the ETEC 690 course provided constructive comments to fine tune my TCC presentation. Mahalo Nui Loa for all your help!
